Electrolux Hood, Hob & Oven

Last nite we went to Modern Home Fair 2009 @ MECC (Midvalley). We were in search of electrical appliances for our new home.. specifically the kitchen hood, hob & oven. I have browsed the net for review & feedback on various models that is on sale before the homefair.. pacifica, fagor, elba.. but none catch my attention. Maybe because I have set my eyes & mind on Electrolux? Why Electrolux? Simply because of its durability and after sales services.

I head straight to Electrolux booth when I saw it. It does not take me long to choose the hob since I have made my research online.. I wanted two burners only and they differs in sizes (76cm or 90cm), material (glass or stainless steel) and burner stand material (iron cast or metal). I've chose the combination: 76cm, glass & iron cast: EGG7222SX (this glass is a safety glass type but i don't know how it differs from tempered glass).I have always liked chimney hood with sleek & slim facade.. hence the choice of EFC9573X. The suction power is 1400m3/hr (macamla nk masak char koay teow mcm kat tepi jalan tu!) and it has twin dual filter. The best part, this model is maintenance free.. you don't have to change the carbon inside but of course, you had to hack the wall for its suction hole piping.
Oven? No studies done.. I just grab the PWP offer: EOB31002X for RM1999. The ttl cost for those 3 items are RM5k. From the original price listed (on the catalog), I've saved RM832. And we also received a free gift: non-stick steam iron worth RM69. boleyla tu..

Cheapest 3D/ 4D Scan in KL

This is not a promotion but I'd like to share this good info with everyone.. the cheapest 3D/ 4D scan in KL that i've done during my previous pregnancy.

Vision College is actually a college that offers diploma in health science, medical imaging & ultrasonography. Apart from those 3 diplomas, they also offer detail scan as well as 3D/ 4D scan for preggy mummy. The cost for detail scan is RM120 and the cost for 3D/ 4D is RM60 only!! Murah kan?? They are located in Kelana Jaya ParkView.

For detail scan, they will give you a report in binded-book form and CD. There will be loads of 2Dscans of your baby organs & anatomy in the book. From the head to toe and everything in between. It will take around 1hour for the detail scanning process. Detail scan can be done when mummy is around 20weeks preggy.

For 3D/4D scan, the time taken is shorter if they can capture your bb picture clearly. Sometimes the baby is so shy, she will cover her face with her hand. When this happen, prepare for a longer time. Might takes up to more than 1hour! This type of scan can be done when mummy is around 28-32weeks preggy. The report will be in CD form as it includes the video (that is 4D) of the movement of your baby.

Postnatal care - normal delivery

there's a lot of resources for us to refer to nowadays.. regarding to postnatal care or amalan berpantang. as for me..

fudstuff:
breakfast - 3 slices of bread+any kinds of spread (avoid serikaya for first 2 weeks) + milo+quaker oat (4 tbsp of oat is dumped into milo)
*lunch - nasik panas+ikan/daging +sawi tumis air + air akar kayu+madu/blended pegaga
tea - milo+cream crackers (normaly its 5pcs)/2 slices of bread
dinner - repeat lunch menu

*lunch/ dinner - i add on halia muda+lada hitam as side dish. sometime i took pasta or spaghetti.. and the main dish varies from ikan bakar to sup ikan and daging salai to rasam. sometimes my mom made kerabu pegaga (pegaga+halia+kunyit+bawang+air asam)

* i also consume chocolate! boleh kan? :p

urut:
start at day 3 for 3consecutive days. i'm very comfy with kak minah, the tukang urut from medan. she also offers complete postnatal care which start after subuh. what she'll do is:
1. prepare herbal bath
2. while mothers bathing.. she prepare breakfast for mommy
3. while mommy having breakfast.. she bathe baby
4. after breakfast and settle down baby (nursing), the urut will begin.. for 2hours, at least
5. tungku
6. ikat bengkung
7. prepare lunch for mommy while mommy resting or nursing baby
8. done & she's ready to go home.

i dared not asked her the ttl cost as i took only no. 4-6 and it cost me rm70 (in 2006 its only rm50) sigh..

tungku&bengkung:
every morning beginning after 10-14days.. after bathe do the tungku and later on, bengkung/ binder. i bought bengkung tali kasut. easy for me to handle it myself. before bengkung, put on kapur+sireh or any kind of cream for barut on the stomach. this is to avoid flabby tummy. i use nona roguy's.. for same reason - easy! nite time, i use simple binder which can be bought frm any pharmacy (yg zrap zrap tu..). btw, bengkung should stat rite after delivery.. use the simple binder as your bengkung in the hospital. after day 3, u can start to bind your stomach properly using the bengkung tali kasut or bengkung lilit.

jamu:
u can consume any jamu that suits your body.. jamu nih utk melancarkan peredaran darah & bg panas dlm badan.. i was understood by my tukang urut that the indonesian-mommy-in-confinement take jamu every 1 hour.. religiously! fuh fuh fuh! but they don't do tungku.

drinks:
most ppl had air periuk or air akar kayu during the whole pantang period. i took nona roguy's akar kayu. easy peasy! just add-on hot water and honey. other than that, its good to drink milk, horlicks, milo and even ribena! and don't forget to take at least 8glasses of white water.

the info below is from nona roguy leaflet:

#types of fruit: red apple, sweet orange, delima, apricot, grapes, lai, kurma, buah tin, buah zaitun.

Rambut gugur selepas bersalin

Orang tua-tua kata, budak dah mula menyembur.. biasala tu..

Apa yg patut saya lakukan??

Pelbagai jenis syampu dah cuba.. syampu baby? syampu anti-gugur? syampu anti-stress pun dah cuba (rambut gugur punya pasal - sampai stress!) tapi masih gugur dgn kronik juga.

Kaedahnya.. potong rambut pendek.

Elakkan menyikat rambut semasa rambut basah.

Elakkan membuat rawatan menggunakan bahan kimia seperti mengerinting, mewarnakan dan sebagainya sehingga rambut kembali normal.

Infant vomiting after feeding

My bb always vomit after feeding.. it's not normal kinda vomiting but very volatile and projectile. it begins when she's 2weeks old and worsen as her milk intake increase as she's approaching 3-4weeks old. i had to change her clothes and bedsheet and my t-shirt very often.

This is what i found from my googling - webmd.com:

Spitting up and vomiting in babies have become a huge area of parental concern. Part of the concern is positive because it reflects a better understanding of reflux disease, but another part may be negative and reflects a push to blame vomiting for all problems (such as colic). As a result, there is a trend to place younger and younger infants on medications they may not really need and for whom possible side effects have not been determined.

What Causes Reflux in Babies?

After your baby swallows milk, it glides past the back of the throat into a muscular tube (the esophagus) and, from there, into the stomach. At the junction of the esophagus and the stomach is a ring of muscles (lower esophageal sphincter) that opens to let the milk drop into the stomach and then tightens to prevent the milk (and the stomach contents) from moving back up into the esophagus. If the stomach contents should happen to re-enter the esophagus, this is called "reflux."
Infants are especially prone to reflux because:
  1. Their stomachs are quite small (about the size of their fists or a golf ball), so they are easily distended by the milk.
  2. The lower esophagus valve may be immature and may not tighten up when it should.

Is Your Baby a "Happy Spitter?"

Every baby spits up or vomits occasionally, and some do quite often or even with every feeding. If, despite the spitting, your baby is
  • content
  • in no discomfort
  • growing fine
  • experiencing no breathing problems from the vomiting
she is what pediatricians call "a happy spitter" and no treatment is needed. Typically, the lower esophagus valve tightens up sometime in the first year, usually around 4-5 months of age, at which time the spitting up may go away.

Alhamdulillah.. pyloric stenosis is ruled out since there were no other symptoms other than vomiting. she is gaining weight considerably and yes, very content and not showing any discomfort. so, it seems that my bb is a happy spitter ;)

The doctor in health center recommend to feed her in small amount and then pat her back to let the air out from her stomach and then continue feeding and patting and feeding and patting.. up until she's full. Now she is 3months and the projectile vomiting rarely occurs except when she is having a bad cough. poor little girl :(

Home reno

We are in the process of renovating our new 'old' house. It's an old house.. almost same age as me, and we just purchased it last year.

What to consider when you have decided to do your home renovation? These are good info taken from IMPIANA March2009:

1. Planning
2. Contractor
3. Budget
4. Contract/ Agreement
5. Tips

1. Planning
  • List the renovation project you are considering - the kitchen? the porch? the bath? overall?
  • Get information about renovation from experienced frens and neighbors - those who had done it before
  • Refer magazine/ catalog and show houses to get the idea for your reno project
  • Do some research on the total reno cost <-- to get a rough idea of the reno cost
  • Check the value-added after your home reno (esp. if you want to re-sell it)
  • Always follow your budget

2. Contractor
There are 2 different types of contractor:
1. kontraktor umum - more knowledgeable & experienced but the quality depends on them or their sub-con. if its good then you R lucky!
2. interior deco - they control the quality and more flexible with any changes made but the price might shoot high since their pricing relies on their contractor

How to look for contractor?
  • ask your frens & neighbors
  • look in magazines
  • from the internet - mr.google :)
What to ask the contractor?
loads of questions listed in IMPIANA but i highlight a few only and the ones that they marked with * means critical:
  • R U a licensed contractor?*
  • R U insuranced? <-- liability & workers*
  • R U abide to agreements?*
  • How long have you been in this business?
  • What kind of projects have you done? Can i have a look at them?
  • How long will you take & what is the estimate budget?
  • What is the term of payment?
  • Do you have any warranty? How long will it be?
When you have shortlisted a few contractors, you have to do do some bargaining.

How to bargain?

These items should be considered when meeting your selected contractors:
  • Explain your priority
  • Explain your expected due date <--mcm bb delivery pulak :p
  • Prepare a set of your expected budget <--that is where you need to do your research
  • Tell them your required specification such as stainless steel equipment in the kitchen or centralized air-cond or others..
  • the more details you listed, the more clearer picture of the pricing you will get <-- but in our case, the more details we listed, the higher cost incurred :((
  • Listen carefully to their feedback especially on the expected budget concern
Do s in selecting contractors:
  • ask around frens and neighbors - which contractor did they use?
  • get a reference
  • semak lesen & keperluan sijil di kawasan anda
  • dapatkan pengesahan lesen, insurans dan perjanjian
  • have a look at their previous projects
  • go to their office
  • follow your instinct <-- the only thing that make me sane all this while!
  • not only ask but have a look at their license, insurance, etc.
Don't s in selecting contractors:
  • selecting contractor by appearance only - no project reference
  • taking an easy way to complete the reno job<-- i suppose by letting them do as they wish - OKB xpa la!
  • choosing the lowest quote without looking at their insurance, license & agreement <-- hey! this is what we did!
  • choosing contractor who asked for payment before doing or starting any works <-- but a small down payment sounds reasonable, rite?
  • no job reference
3. Budget
  • what is the amount that you can prepare?
  • what is the max loan amount and what is the loan interest rate?
  • what is the monthly repayment that you can spend?
  • how long do you plan to stay in the renovated house?
  • adakah pelaburan (the reno) anda akan berbaloi? - some of value added items: bigger built up, additional room, additional bathroom & spacious kitchen.
4. Contract/ Agreement shall consist:
  • detail specification of the project
  • specification of material, finishing, doors, etc2.
  • specification of materials or goods that will be prepared by the home owner
  • other allowances or charges for 'kemasan' & 'pemasangan' that might occurred during the reno works
  • start date & expected to complete date
  • project plan, permit & 'pemeriksaan'
  • payment terms & condition
  • communication method
  • how a changes can be made
  • how to solve disagreement
  • kemudahan tandas boleh-alih, keselamatan, pembuangan sisa & pembersihan
  • penjagaan tanaman/ landskap; alihan kotoran/ pagar
  • warranty
  • final agreement
  • layout plan
  • area plan
  • peta ukuran
5. Tips - some good tips from the ID:
  • ensure not many changes be made during the reno works
  • spot check at least twice a week especially during the beginning
  • identify whether it will be wet work (ceiling, paint, piping, wiring) or dry work (lighting, furniture design). wet work shall be done first!
  • identify your style & concept
  • ensure the contractor have a good track record & flexible

BAD Cholesterol aka Kolestrol JAHAT

My other half has a unique health problem related with blood - thrombocytosis.
How it was detected? In 2003, he fainted 4times in 1day. He was admitted to SJMC for 5days where the doctors did various of test on him. From blood test to MRI. They couldn't find any abnormalities except high platelet count. I found out something else from his blood test: high count of LDL!!

The info below is an excerpt from ehealthmd.com

What is LDL? Low-density lipoprotein (or LDL) cholesterol is a BAD type of cholesterol that is most likely to clog blood vessels, increasing your risk for heart disease.

Another type of Cholestrol is HDL - High-density lipoprotein (or HDL) cholesterol is a good type of cholesterol. HDL cholesterol helps clear the LDL cholesterol out of the blood and reduces your risk for heart disease.

Now, what causes my husband to have high LDL? There are 2 main factors contribute to high LDL.. genetic and lifestyle. Both of my PILs are diebetics and this causes their indescendent to inherit high triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are another type of blood fat that can push up cholesterol levels. This factor is out of man's control.

Lifestyle factors:
Eating too much saturated fat (the kind found in high-fat meats and dairy products) and cholesterol can cause your body to make more cholesterol, raising your blood cholesterol levels. You can lower your cholesterol level by cutting down on animal fat and other fats and eating foods rich in starch and fiber, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
How active you are. Regular exercise not only reduces total blood cholesterol, but it lowers the bad kind of cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) while raising the good kind of cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
What you weigh. Being overweight contributes to rising blood cholesterol levels. Fortunately, changes to lower cholesterol levels also help you control your weight, a double benefit.

There are three main types of fats in food, and they affect blood cholesterol in different ways:

  • Saturated fat - Found in red meats and red meat products, such as beef and lamb, as well as dairy products; in tropical oils such as palm oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil; and in vegetables oils that have been chemically changed to make them solid at room temperature (a process called hydrogenation).
  • Monounsaturated fats - Found in plant oils such as olive, canola, and peanut oil. Monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature but harden in the refrigerator.
  • Polyunsaturated fats - Found in plant oils such as safflower, sunflower, corn, or soybean oil. Fish, especially cold-water fish, contain a special type of polyunsaturated fat called omega-3 fat that may help protect against heart disease by slowing blood clotting. Polyunsaturated fats remain liquid even at colder temperatures.
Saturated fat is the main cause of high blood cholesterol levels. When you eat too much saturated fat, your body reacts by making more cholesterol than it needs, and the surplus ends up in your blood.

To replace saturated fat with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat:
  • Use margarine and spreads made from these oils instead of butter. (If a food lists a hydrogenated oil as the first or second ingredient, it is still high in saturated fat.)
  • Use liquid vegetable oils in cooking.
Only animal foods contain cholesterol - plant foods do not contain cholesterol. In animals, as in humans, cholesterol is a part of all cells and serves many vital functions. Therefore, foods of animal origin - such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or milk - all contain some cholesterol.

Generally, foods high in animal fat are also high in cholesterol. Two exceptions to this generalization are liver and eggs, which are not high in fat but are high in cholesterol.

  • Liver contains large amounts of cholesterol because the liver is the body organ that makes cholesterol.
  • Eggs contain large amounts of cholesterol because they contain the nutrients and other substances to support a growing embryo (eggs also contain a very high quality of protein and are rich in vitamins and minerals).
Eating more of the foods rich in starches and dietary fiber - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds - can help lower your cholesterol level in several ways:
  • Carbohydrate-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are naturally low in calories. When you eat more of these foods, you will eat less of the foods higher in fat and cholesterol.
  • Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts and seeds are good sources of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber, especially a certain type of fiber called soluble fiber, can help lower cholesterol levels by sweeping cholesterol out of the body before it gets to the bloodstream. Especially high in soluble fiber are foods such as oat bran, beans, peas, rice bran, citrus fruits, and psyllium seed (the main ingredient in Metamucil, a fiber supplement available at pharmacies and grocery stores).
  • Carbohydrate-rich fruits and vegetables also contain vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene and other substances that function as antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent cholesterol from being moved out of the blood and into the lining of the blood vessels.
Being physically active can help lower your cholesterol level, whether it involves everyday activities like cleaning or gardening or a structured exercise program. Exercise helps lower cholesterol levels several ways:
  • Exercise increases the amount of HDL cholesterol (the good kind of cholesterol) in your blood, while reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol (the bad, artery-clogging kind of cholesterol).
  • Exercise promotes weight loss and weight control.
  • When you exercise, you tone up your whole body's circulation, helping to clear away clots in the blood vessels and making the heart a stronger, more efficient pump.
Vigorous activities like walking, jogging, biking, and swimming are called aerobic activities, and they are especially good at conditioning the heart and improving circulation. If you choose one of these activities, be sure to start slowly and build up gradually to avoid strain and injury.

The main lifestyle changes to help you lower your cholesterol levels are:
  • Reduce fat and cholesterol in your diet.
  • Eat more foods rich in carbohydrates and fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Increase your level of physical activity.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight.

Rahsia di sebalik demam

skrg musim ujan. musim hujan=musim demam, selsema, batuk dan sewaktu dengannya. i found this gud article while cleaning up my yahoo mailbox.. this post served as a reference for me.. and those who stumbled upon my blog..

Mengeluh Dan Mengadu Kerana Demam

Kesabaran Nabi Ayyub a.s

Nabi Shallallahu alaihi wasallam bersabda: "Jangan engkau memaki penyakit demam, kerana dia menghilangkan kesalahan Bani Adam (manusia) sebagaimana landasan (tukang besi) menghilangkan kotoran (karat) besi". (Hadith Riwayat Muslim)

Familiar stranger in our house

A few months before I was born, my dad met a stranger who was new to oursmall town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer, and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in our family. In my young mind, each member had a special niche. My brother, Bilal, five years my senior, was my example. Fatimah, my younger sister, gave me an opportunityto play big brother and develop the art of teasing. My parents werec omplementary instructors - Mom taught me to love the word of Allah, and Dad taught me to obey it.

But the stranger was our storyteller. He could weave the most fascinating tales. Adventures, mysteries, and comedies were daily conversations. He could hold our whole family spell-bound for hours each evening. If I wanted to know about politics, history, or science, he knew it. He knew about the past, understood the present, and seemingly could predict thefuture. The pictures he could draw were so life like that I would oftenlaugh or cry as I listened. He was like a friend to the whole family. He took Dad, Bilal, and me to our first major league baseball game. He was always encouraging us to see the movies and he even made arrangements to introduce us to several movie stars.

The stranger was an incessant talker. Dad didn't seem to mind but sometimes Mom would quietly get up while the rest of us were enthralled with one of his stories of faraway places, go to her room, and read her Quran and pray. I wonder now if she ever prayed that the stranger would leave. You see, my dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions. But this stranger never felt an obligation to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our house-not for some of us,from our friends, or adults. Our longtime visitor, however, used occasional four letter words that turned my ears and made Dad squirm. To my knowledge, the stranger was never confronted. My dad was a teetotaler who didn't permit alcohol in his home, as good Muslims should. But the stranger felt like we needed exposure and enlightened us to other ways of life. He offered us beer and other alcoholic beverages often. He made cigarettes look tasty, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely(probably too much, too freely) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I know now that the stranger influenced my early concepts of the man-woman relationship.

As I look back, I believe it was the grace of Allah that the stranger did not influence us more. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents. Yet, he was seldom rebuked and never asked to leave. More than thirty years have passed since the stranger moved in with the young family on Wangee Road. He is not nearly so intriguing to my Dad as he was inthose early years. But if I were to walk into my parents den today, you would still see him sitting over in a corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name you ask? We called him TV.
